Tiny 3" long Grackle

The tiny metal leg approach was inspired by IKEA's DVÄRGTALL figures

Eastern Whip-poor-will. My first attempt at a decoy! A little rough around the edges, but all in all very pleased with how it came out.

My process...

  1. Draw profile silhouette of Whip-poor-will
  2. "Inflate" silhouette in Illustrator
  3. Get model 3D printed (actual size!)
  4. Create a silicone mold and cast in hydrostone
  5. Paint!

First layer of paint...

Tip from my mistakes the first time around!

  1. Don't use Dollar Tree paint!! (That's why this initial layer looks so watery!)
  2. Mix more paint than you think you need to go over the inevitable mistakes
  3. Paint a solid mid-tone before anything!

I made him a friend!

Albatross Bookend

Slightly rougher side

The moth silhouettes are life size- from large to small the species are Cecropia, Luna, Isabella Tiger, and Rosy Maple.
